Now, I don’t have an iphone. I’ve never really been that into gadgets. But, I absolutely adore all the hipstamatic app shots that are going about the web at the moment. It almost made me want to Apple-makeover my life. But then Jay rightly reminded me that we’ve got Photoshop and I can recreate the look pretty easily. So I did.

  • I cropped the image into a square, then upped the green midtones in the ‘Image>Adjustments>Color balance’ option. You can mess with the other colour tones too until you get a look you like. High red also looks quite cool and gives an early 80s polaroid kind of effect!
  • Then I went to ‘Image>Appearance>Brightness and contrast’ and upped both – contrast slightly more.
  • I then added a duplicate layer and applied a ‘Filter>Blur>Guassian blur’ to that layer and used the eraser tool on a large, round setting to punch a hole in the layer to see the clear image underneath.
  • Then I added a new layer, filled it in black and punched another hole in that with a soft option on the eraser tool to create a blurry black frame.

So there you have it! Hope that makes sense. Just need a cool frame now. Can anyone recommend a good digi option for frames?

Incidentally, have you heard the origins of the hipstamatic? It’s a fascinating and tragic story of two Wisconsin brothers in the early 80s who wanted to create a cheap camera for mass production that everyone could use to capture their moments and memories. Their names were Bruce and Winston Dorbowski and they were killed in a car crash on their way home from signing a lease on what would have been their first factory. Years later, two graphic designers from Synthetic Infatuation were inspired by them to create the app that’s so popular today.

Bruce and Winston’s brother, Richard keeps a fitting tribute to them at http://hipstamatic.com. What legends. I’m sure they’d be thrilled to know how their idea has inspired a new generation of photographers.
